After practicing with the band the other night I got to thinking about my mandolin and some trouble I've been having keeping it in tune and the bridge tilt was to far forward and I wanted the action just a tad lower. I spent yesterday morning and this morning making adjustments.
I shaved some material off the top of the nut so only 1/2 or less of the string sits in the slot. Re-cut them to be more inline with the tuners and added some graphite. Big improvement in tuning smoothness. After that I started re-fitting the bridge for a little more backward lean using chalk and a scraper. This worked great up to the last little bit where I went to 400 grit sandpaper for the final fit. Perfect! Now I still need to lower the action a tad so I'll have to re-cut the grooves because I'm out of adjustment. I hope I can squeeze in some time tomorrow to wrap it up. I keep getting better at this every year. I think I've got it all figured out now but I know I'll be better still in another couple years. This is a great hobby.
